Many of us know what cannabis is but many do not know what hemp is. This article will attempt to answer that question of what’s the difference between hemp and marijuana.
Cannabis plants have been used for fibre (in the stems of the plants) and oil and movable parts (in the leaves and flowers) for thousands of years. The plant is now grown for other purposes. It is often mixed with other crops or used to make hemp rope. The fibre from the hemp plant is still highly valued and used in many countries as paper.
People are curious about what hemp is because of its similarities to marijuana. However, it is important to realise that hemp is not the same thing as marijuana. Hemp is considered to be less intoxicating than marijuana, and therefore is legal on a federal level because of this.
Marijuana and hemp have similar effects on the body and mind but they are not exactly the same. Marijuana contains a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. This chemical is found in the marijuana plant, but in hemp, the chemical is called cannabidiol, which does not produce the same effect in the human body as THC. The difference between hemp and marijuana is that marijuana contains high amounts of THC while hemp does not.
What Exactly Is Hemp?
So, what is hemp and how do you grow it? The answer to this question depends a lot on where you live.
There are two main types of hemp: inter-plant hemp (which are also known as fiber hemp and is grown for industrial use) and cut flower hemp (which is commonly confused with marijuana and is grown for personal consumption). Both types have some of the same properties of marijuana, so they both have a similar effect on the body, but it’s the CBD and THC levels that determine the legal differences.
Hemp contains less than 0.3% of THC but is loaded with 100 different types of CBD. The great thing about CBD is that it promotes relaxation, pain relief and a general positive mood. Consuming it through oral means is usually the most effective option, and that means either drinking the oil or smoking the dried plant. This doesn’t fit into the difference between hemp and marijuana because both plant variations require the same consumption methods.
Growing Hemp Plants
When growing your own hemp garden, you will want to grow both types of hemp. Cut flower hemp is easier to grow than inter-plant. Cut flower hemp can usually be planted anywhere except for the middle of the border of your garden. But if you do want to grow it close to the border then you will need to keep in mind that the hemp flower buds are shorter than the stalks.
